കെ പി രാമനുണ്ണി എഴുതിയ സൂഫി പറഞ്ഞ കഥ എന്ന നോവലിന്റെ ചലച്ചിത്ര രൂപമാണ് പ്രിയനന്ദനന്റെ സൂഫി പറഞ്ഞ കഥ. ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കഥ രചിച്ചതും നോവലിസ്റ്റ് തന്നെ.
മേലേപ്പുല്ലാര തറവാട്ടിലെ ഒരേയൊരു അവകാശിയായ കാര്ത്ത്യായനി എന്ന കാര്ത്തിയാണ് (ശര്ബാനി മുഖര്ജി) കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രം. അസാധാരണമായ ജാതകവുമായാണ് കാര്ത്തിയുടെ പിറവിയെന്ന് അമ്മാവന് ശങ്കു മേനോന്(തമ്പി ആന്റണി) ഗണിച്ചെടുക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കച്ചവടത്തിനായി അവിടെയെത്തുന്ന മാമൂട്ടിയുമായി (പ്രകാശ് ബാരെ) കാര്ത്തി പ്രണയത്തിലാവുന്നു. നാടുവിടലിലും മതം മാറ്റത്തിലുമൊക്കെ എത്തുന്ന ഈ പ്രണയം ഇരുവരുടെയും ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ രൂപഭാവങ്ങള് മാറ്റിക്കളയുന്നു; ഒപ്പം, രണ്ടു കുടുംബങ്ങളുടെയും ഒരു നാടിന്റെയും കഥയും മാറ്റിയെഴുതപ്പെടുന്നു. കാര്ത്തി വിശ്വാസികളുടെ രക്ഷകയായ ബീവിയാകുന്ന കഥ സൂഫി പറയുന്നിടത്താണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കവും അവസാനവും.
ബാബു ആന്റണി (സൂഫി), ജഗതി ശ്രീകുമാര് (മുസലിയാര്), ഗീത വിജയന്, വി കെ ശ്രീരാമന്, വല്സല മേനോന് തുടങ്ങിയവരും ഈ ചിത്രത്തില് പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള വേഷങ്ങള് അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

ഒരേ അച്ചിലിട്ടു വാര്ത്ത മട്ടിലുള്ള കണ്ടു മടുത്ത മലയാളസിനിമകളില് നിന്ന് ഒരു വ്യത്യാസം. പ്രകാശ് ബാരെ, ശര്ബാനി മുഖര്ജി, തമ്പി ആന്റണി തുടങ്ങിയ അഭിനേതാക്കളെല്ലാം തന്നെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളോട് നീതി പുലര്ത്തി. നമുക്ക് വലിയ പരിചയമില്ലാത്ത ശര്ബാനിയെ കാര്ത്തിയാക്കിയ പ്രിയനന്ദനനും അഭിനന്ദനം അര്ഹിക്കുന്നു.
മതം, വിശ്വാസം, ജീവിതം, സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം തുടങ്ങിയവയേക്കുറിച്ച് എല്ലാ കാലത്തും പ്രസക്തമായ ചില ചിന്തകള് ഈ ചിത്രം മുന്നോട്ടു വയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. മതം മാറീന്ന്ച്ചിട്ട് ഉമ്മയില്ലാണ്ടാവോ? പോലെയുള്ള ചില വലിയ ചോദ്യങ്ങളും ഈ ചിത്രത്തില് കേള്ക്കാം.
MINUSES
നോവലിന്റെ രൂപത്തില് നിന്ന് പുറപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും സിനിമയുടെ ചട്ടക്കൂടിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരാന് കഴിയുന്നില്ല പ്രിയനന്ദനന്റെ സൂഫി പറഞ്ഞ കഥയ്ക്ക്. സിനിമ എന്ന അപാര സാധ്യതകളുള്ള മാധ്യമം, തിരക്കഥയൊരുക്കിയ നോവലിസ്റ്റിന്റെ കൈയില് ഒതുങ്ങാതെ പോയതാണ് പ്രധാന പ്രശ്നം. അതു മനസ്സിലാക്കി പരിഹരിക്കാന് സംവിധായകനു കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലെന്നത് അതിലും വലിയ പ്രശ്നമായി.
അതുകൊണ്ട്, നോവലിന്റെ വിശാലമായ കാന്വാസില് മിഴിവോടെ നില്ക്കുന്ന പല ചിത്രങ്ങളും തിരക്കഥയിലും തിരശീലയിലും പലപ്പോഴും അവ്യക്തമായിപ്പോകുന്നു. മാമൂട്ടിയുടെ സ്വവര്ഗാനുരാഗവും മുസലിയാരുടെ ഭാവപ്പകര്ച്ചയും കാര്ത്തി അമീറിനെ കൂട്ടികൊണ്ടു പോകുന്നതുമൊക്കെ സിനിമയില് തീരെ ന്യായീകരിക്കപ്പെടാതെ കടന്നു പോവുകയാണ്. സൂഫിയുടെ കഥ കേള്ക്കാന് ഒരു പത്രപ്രവര്ത്തകനെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നിരുത്തിയതും ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ മൊത്തം മൂഡുമായി ചേരാതെ നില്ക്കുന്നു.

മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്താനുള്ള മേഖലകള് ഒരുപാട് ബാക്കി വച്ച് നിര്മിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു അമച്വര് സംരഭം.

പ്രിയനന്ദന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ രണ്ടു ചിത്രങ്ങളായ നെയ്തുകാരന്ഉം പുലിജന്മംവും പോലെ സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യന് മനസ്സിലാവാത്ത മറ്റൊരു സിനിമ. ഇതൊക്കെ ആണ് സിനിമ എന്ന് കരുതുന്ന ബുദ്ധി ജീവികള്ക്ക് ചിലപ്പോള് മനസ്സിലാകും ആയിരിക്കും. അടൂര് ഗോപാലകൃഷ്ണന്ഉം ഷാജി N കരുണും T V ചന്ദ്രനും പ്രിയനന്ദനും ഒക്കെ ഉള്ള മലയാള സിനിമ സമ്പന്നവും ഉദാത്തവും തന്നെ! പത്തു ദിവസമെങ്ങിലും തിയേറ്റര്ഇല് ഓടുന്ന കുറഞ്ഞ പക്ഷം നൂറു പേരെങ്കിലും കാണുന്ന സിനിമകള്ക്ക് മാത്രമേ അവാര്ഡും മറ്റും കൊടുക്കാവൂ എന്നൊരു ഉപാധി കൂടി അവാര്ഡ് കമ്മിറ്റിക്ക് മുമ്പില് വെച്ചിരുന്നെങ്ങില് എന്നാശിച്ചു പോകുന്നു. പ്രേക്ഷകന് കാണാന് അല്ലെങ്ങില് ഇവരൊക്കെ ആര്ക്കു വേണ്ടിയാണു സിനിമ എടുക്കുന്നത് ഇന്ത്യ മഹാരാജ്യത്തില് ആകെ പത്തു പേര് അടങ്ങുന്ന അവാര്ഡ് കമ്മിറ്റിക്ക് വേണ്ടിയോ. വലിയ വിരോധാഭാസം തന്നെ!!! സിനിമ കണ്ടു മനസ്സിലായ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട ആരെങ്കിലും ഉണ്ടാവുമോ എന്തോ ഇന്ദുലേഖയില്.

In 2010 also, to preserve secularism we need an upper caste girl and a muslim boy!!!. What will happen if the girl is a muslim and boy is a hindu? Did the director know the story of Balakrishnan of Kasargod who was killed by muslims for marrying a muslim girl?

If you don’t like art category (somebody says like that), please don’t go and watch. But these type of good movies should be there in Malayalam industry. Those movies had the impact of giving a good reputation of Malayalam. I like all type of Malayalam movies like Danny, Devasuram, Kayyoppu, Kireedam, Palerimanikyam, Kilukkam etc. But please don’t support only movies like Chattambinadu, Happy husbands etc. About Sufi Paranja Katha, you may/may not like. Prakash Bare (actor here) is a reputed Business man and because of his passion to cinema, he produced this movie. Let others enjoy it who likes good cinemas.
dear Kuruvila, if you want only things that has popular demand, then you must drink whisky all the time…….if the same thing happens in Literature , we will have only painkili novels of Mangalam and manorama , if it happens in politics, we won’t have a joseph mundassery .
Shaji N Karun’s films are much better entertainers (if nothing else matters to you) than many recent malayalam movies (eg. Body Guard.)

എന്താണ് സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യന് മനസിലാവുന്ന സിനിമ? ദ്രോണ, ബോഡി ഗാര്ഡ് മുതലായ സിനിമകള് കണ്ടിട്ടു സാധാരണക്കാരന് എന്താണ് മനസിലായത്? അതില് നിന്ന് വല്ലതും മനസിലാക്കാന് കഴിഞ്ഞാല് പ്രിയനന്ദന്റെ സിനിമയും മനസിലാവില്ലേ? സൂഫി പറഞ്ഞ കഥയിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള് സംസാരിച്ചത് ഉറുദുവോ ചൈനീസോ ഒന്നുമല്ലല്ലോ. ആര്ട്ട് സിനിമ ആളുകള്ക്ക് മനസിലാവില്ല എന്ന പറച്ചിലിന് മലയാള സിനിമയോളം പഴക്കമുണ്ട്. ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നവര് സാധാരണ അത്തരം സിനിമ ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും കണ്ടിട്ടുള്ളവാരോ കാണാന് താല്പര്യമുള്ളവരോ അല്ല.
പ്രിയനന്ദന്റെ ഈ സിനിമയെ ആര്ട്ട് സിനിമ എന്ന് വിളിച്ചു പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കരുത് എന്നാണ് എന്റെ അപേക്ഷ. ഇതൊരു ആര്ട്ട് സിനിമയൊന്നുമല്ല. എന്തോ ചെയ്യാന് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള ഒരു ശ്രമം! സിനിമ എന്ന മാധ്യമം പ്രിയനന്ദന് ഇനിയും വഴങ്ങിയിട്ടില്ല എന്നാണ് മനസിലാക്കേണ്ടത്. അദ്ദേഹം എന്നെങ്കിലുമൊരു സിനിമ നന്നായിട്ട് ചെയ്യുമായിരിക്കും!
കുരുവിള പറഞ്ഞതിനോട് മുഴുവന് യോജിക്കുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും, പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകള്ക്ക് മുന്പ് അടൂരും മറ്റു ചിലരും തുടങ്ങി വെച്ച അതേ ശൈലിയില് ഇപ്പോഴും സിനിമ എടുക്കുന്നതിന്റെ സാംഗത്യം എന്താണ്? ആര്ട്ട് പടം എന്നും കച്ചവട സിനിമ എന്നുമുള്ള വേര്ത്തിരിവ് സിനിമക്ക് ആവശ്യം ഇല്ല. പക്ഷെ, ഒരു വിഷയത്തിനെ വലിച്ചു നീട്ടി, കുറച്ചു കഥകളിയും അമ്പലവും മതേതരത്വവും കൂട്ടി കുഴച്ചു ആര് സിനിമ എടുത്താലും മഹത്തരം എന്ന് പറയുന്നതിനോട് യോജിപ്പില്ല. ചലച്ചിത്ര മേളകളില് അവാര്ഡുകള് മിക്കവാറും തൂത്തു വാരി കൊണ്ട് പോകുന്ന ഇറാനില് നിന്നും മറ്റുമുള്ള സിനിമകള് പ്രേക്ഷകരെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്നവയാണ്. അല്ലാതെ ആറ് ആണുങ്ങളുടെയും ഒമ്പത് പെണ്ണുങ്ങളുടെയും കാലാഹരണപ്പെട്ട കഥകള് പറഞ്ഞു പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ ക്ഷമയെ പരീക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ചവറുകള് അല്ല പുതു തലമുറയിലെ ബുദ്ധിജീവി സംവിധായകര് മാതൃക ആക്കേണ്ടത്. ഈ സിനിമ ഞാന് കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. എന്നാലും, പതിവ് ആര്ട്ട് മസാലകള് ചേര്ക്കാത്ത കാമ്പുള്ള ചിത്രം ആയിരുന്നെങ്കില് എന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു.
excellent justin. good films are one which attract all categories of people not only for the savants. if the so called art film makers are making true life movies of common man why could not the common man identify himself in those movies. better watch world classics and try to learn what is a good movie. for example The Bicycle Thieves made in 1946 considered an all time classic if you see this movie even today you can enjoy this and it would make an indelible mark in your mind that is the power of art. cinema has changed a lot try to come out of the old cliches and try some thing new. remember we could make a Kerala Cafe last year, an unique move in all respects though it had its own shortcomings. but it was a refreshing change. do the new.

You may prefer movies where you get the thrills, the creeps, the laughs, the adrenaline rushes and the erections while munching popcorn with your family or girlfriend. Fine, your taste and choice of movies are up to you. But that doesn’t mean you have the right to slam anybody who has a different take on approaching movies. Some people around the world try to make movies a little more creatively. You and your buddies may dismiss such efforts as art movies, but they appeal to a lot of normal people all over the world. I am not saying that everything that masquerades as art film in Malayalam is a good film, and I don’t know about Sufy because I haven’t seen it, but I know that Priyanandanan has made at least one very good film, and that is Pulijanmam. It is not a pretender the way some random brush strokes pretend to be surrealist art, but is quite the opposite, a very understandable, well crafted, well paced, skillfully made, well shot and well acted movie. The score too is above average. Definitely one of the best Malayalam movies of the last decade, though I wouldn’t call it great or world class.
You may not like this movie, but you need not slander Priyanandanan, especially when you can’t even bother to find what is wrong with the movie. Speaking in the light of Pulijanmam, guys like these are trying to resist the boxoffice lure and make some real good movies on stringy budgets, so they definitely deserve some encouragement. If you hate their guts and can’t pat them on the back, at least keep from throwing dirt on them.
You can’t slander a movie just because you don’t understand it or because it is outside your limited taste. You can’t label theoretical physics bad just because you can’t understand it. But Pulijanmam is not that hard to appreciate. A normal guy like me could enjoy it.
Would be well worth a second watch after you graduate from high school.

With respect to your last two sentences, which apparently are a comment on all of his movies:
It is pretty bold to make a hugely sweeping statememt like the one you made. It implies you are at least familiar with the nuances of masterful filmmaking, if not already a directorial maestro yourself. I have seen only one Priyanandanan film, Pulijanmam. And while not exactly something on the scale of Altman or Scorsese, that movie is certainly a bigger challenge and a better directorial achievement than anything the likes of Blessy, Ranjith, Kamal and the like have achieved.

എന്നെനിക്കു തോന്നുന്നില്ല. എന്നുവച്ചാല് പുലി ജന്മം ഞാന് കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. നെയ്ത്തുകാരനും സൂഫി പറഞ്ഞ കഥയും കണ്ടു. അതില് മനുഷ്യന് മനസ്സിലാകാത്ത വിധം എന്താ ഉള്ളത്? സാധാരണക്കാരന് മനസ്സിലാക്കാവുന്നതേ ഉള്ളു . പിന്നെ ഇഴഞ്ഞ് നീങ്ങുന്നു കഥ; അത്രേ തോന്നിയുള്ളൂ. കാര്ത്യായനിയെ ദൃശ്യവല്ക്കരിച്ച കഥാപാത്രം ഒരു നല്ല മലയാളി പെണ്കൊടിയാകാമായിരുന്നു . അതല്പ്പം വൃത്തികേടായിപ്പോയി.
